District 31 to conclude 3-year-long service project for women and children in Laos villages

Nine members from District 31, led by District Service Committee Chair Farica Lu, visited Houylae Village in Luang Pragang of Laos in mid-November to unveil the primary school that District 31 Zontians have donated to build in a cross-country service project.

The three-year service project, which will conclude later this year, also includes health and sanitation programs for students, particularly girls, in which they learn proper ways to wash their hands and brush their teeth.

The new school complex now houses five classrooms, one faculty room and three toilets.

Teaching materials in Houylae and nine primary schools in other villages have been upgraded.

Women in Houylae and several other villages are the beneficiaries of the livelihood development programs. They take lessons in cooking and weaving as well as in simple marketing so they are able to make some money to help support their families.

Nutrition groups were also formed in several villages for young mothers to learn how to prepare food and take care of young children.

World Vision Taiwan and Laos are District 31’s partners in this overseas service, spanning from 2016 to 2018. The total donation amount equaled US$200,000.
