The Zonta Club of Noarlunga Southern Vales Inc., District 23, was recently recognized with local awards for exceptional service projects.
Each year, the government of South Australia encourages and recognizes the work being done by area service clubs by presenting awards. The club won the Premier’s Civic Improvement Award and was the overall winner of the Distinction Award for 2017 for an outstanding project.
The awards were in recognition of the Healing Garden Project which involved providing a healing space at one of the domestic violence shelters in the southern region of Adelaide in South Australia.
The goal of the project was to establish a healing garden to promote a meditative area that would helpfully encourage healing for the victims of domestic violence and their families.
A member said the club has worked closely with the Southern Domestic Service for many years and was proud to work with them on this project.
Additionally, Mary Colvill, the coordinator and facilitator for the Zonta Club of Noarlunga Southern Vale Inc's Breast Cushion project, was award the Annual Southern Suburbs Volunteer Service Award for 2017. This award was given by Amanda Rishworth, a member of the Australian House of Representatives.
As coordinator of the Breast Cushion project, Mary has ordered material, organized cutting, sewing, stuffing and packing days for the last 20 years. She works with Breast Care nurses at various hospitals and distributes the cushions to hospitals in Adelaide.
Mary has overseen the making of more than 5,000 of the post-operative cushions for women who have had surgery for breast cancer.
